The year 2014 is already halfway through. There have been many exciting things to come out of the tech world this year. Smartphones are certainly no exception and there are several that have seen tech enthusiasts and even the average consumer buzzing about the great features they include. Here are five of the top rated smartphones of 2014.

Sony Xperia Z2

The Sony Xperia Z2 was released in April as a follow up to the highly successful Xperia Z1 that came out last year. Following with the Japanese tech giant’s custom, the Z2 is waterproof and dust-proof. It has a 5.2 inch IPS LCD HD touchscreen with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. The screen is shatter proof and the device packs 16GB of internal storage, 3GB of RAM and microSD support for cards as much as 128GB. The LG G3 is one of the most exciting smartphones to be released in 2014. Highly anticipated, it is available for all four major wireless carriers in the United States and has a quality build that mimics a brushed aluminum look although it is made from plastic. The Nokia Lumia 1520 is a gorgeous but huge phablet that runs Windows Phone 8 and has a six inch screen with a 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution. Depending on where you get it, it includes either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and a microSD slot that supports expansion through cards of up to 128GB. The phone includes a 20GB PureView main rear-facing camera and is upgradable to the latest operating system of Windows Phone 8.1 with Cyan.

BlackBerry Passport

Although it is not slated for release until September, the BlackBerry Passport is easily one of the best smartphones of 2014. It is BlackBerry’s best way to get back to being a true contender in the market. The phone has a 4.5 inch screen with a pixel resolution of 1440 by 1440, includes 32GB of internal storage, a microSD slot supporting as much as 64GB of expansion and 3GB of RAM. It runs the latest BlackBerry 10.1 operating system and is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. This is a smartphone that is aimed specifically toward business users.

HTC One M8

Perhaps the most stunning Android smartphone of 2014 that is also easily one of the best of the year is the HTC One M8. Released in March, it includes a gorgeous five inch Super LCD3 display with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, includes internal storage of 16GB or 32GB, 2GB of RAM and has microSD card support of up to 128GB. It runs 4.4.2 KitKat and is upgradable to 4.4.3 KitKat. The smartphone is easy to use and includes HTC’s customary Sense 6 user interface, which is a joy when coupled with BlinkFeed. The phone is gorgeous and is constructed of 90 percent metal.
